âYou really are an arsehole.â The gravelly voice belongs to Sean Black, and he is the last person I want to see right now.
âFuck off,â I growl and step into my dressing room. The Black brothers hate me; in fact, they didnât even want me to open for them, but the concertâs promoter Janie Locke is a ball-buster and what she says goes.
âYouâre not going to get out of this one, pretty boy.â I guess Sean didnât take the hint because heâs standing in the doorway.
âMind your own business.â
âThis concert is my business, and youâre putting it in jeopardy. I donât need you cocking it all up because you donât have balls big enough to tell that girl you love her. In public!â
I narrow my eyes. âYou have no idea what youâre talking about.â
âThe fuck I donât,â he spits out. âIâve been in this business longer than you have. I know a coward when I see one.â
My hands clench into fists, and I resist the urge to level Sean Black. âIâm not a coward,â I say through gritted teeth.
âReally? Then whatâs your fucking plan?â
I spin on my heel because I donât have a fucking clue. The woman Iâm in love with stormed past me, and Iâm not sure if sheâs ever coming back. My eyes land on my guitar. Itâs a 1968 Fender Telecaster with a pink paisley design. My granddad bought it for me when âNTune first formed, and Iâve used it to write most of my songs. A melody has been haunting me for days, but the words have eluded me.
My head turns to meet Sean. âHelp me write a song.â I walk over to the guitar, pick it up from the stand, and sling the strap over my body. âI have a melody.â I play him what Iâve been humming and strumming for days.
Sean snickers. âThatâs your big plan? To write her a song?â
âItâs what she wants,â I say softly. âShe doesnât want to hide anymore.â
Thereâs only one way that my Birdie will forgive me, and thatâs if I do something big and bold. And nothingâs bigger than a concert on St. Patrickâs Day in the Dublin Arena.
I concentrate on the melody, thinking about Brigid. Without her, I feel out of tune. Thereâs only been a handful of weeks when weâve been separated since our relationship began, and every time she was gone, I was a moody bastard and totally out of sorts. But when she returned, it was like sunshine after a long, cold winter. My heart beat louder because she was near.
Sean picks up an acoustic guitar that was in a stand next to my Fender. He easily picks up the melody that Iâve been playing. âTell me about her,â he says.
âIâve known her my whole life.â I sort of sing the words and make them fit my tune. âSomeday, sheâll probably be my wife.â
Sean raises his eyebrows in surprise. âGo on.â
We continue this way until I set my guitar aside and write down the lyrics.
